It depends on what the meaning of the word is is…

The prototype review for the Oracle SOA implementation went very well yesterday. Lots of great technical stuff!

As an added bonus, there was a classic moment that only myself and a couple of other people in the conference room picked up on. You have to know a couple of things about the people in the room:

  • Half are too young to remember much about the Clinton era
  • One fourth are foreign born and probably didn’t get caught up in all the political news of that time in the U.S.
  • Relations from a technical database standpoint refer to how things hook up. Come to think of it I guess that’s what it means in real life too!
  • I am easily amused especially when I’m tired :)

If you’re old enough to remember the Bill Clinton years and you had any political or current event news awareness at all then this headline regarding what the meaning of “is” is probably caught your attention. Long story if you don’t know it so just Google it.

So the scenario is that we are 3 hours into the Prototype/design review, we just had a heavy lunch, lights are dimmed for the projector, I am tired… and easily amused…

One of the consultants who is a very smart, very young, foreign born guy is discussing some deep detail of a queue topic or something – remember, I’m pretty tired at this point – and he responds to a question almost verbatim that the answer “…depends on what the meaning of the word is is.

Okay, I’m wide awake now and have a big smile on my face. Luckily lights are down. I still notice another person in the room across the conference table is smiling pretty big as well.

Not a minute later one of the developers says he was having a problem because he “didn’t have relations on that table.” BWAAAHHHAAAAHHHAAAA Now that is not an exact quote, but close enough for me. A conversation ensues between a couple of developers:
—> I know I had relations on that table
<--- I didn't see any relations. I would swear an oath on a bible (okay, I made that last sentence up) ---> I know you did have relations on that table, but I had some stuff I had to fit in without all the restrictions and nobody was in the office so I….

Across the table, I see an even bigger smile and hear a low chuckle… and it is all I can do to not bust out on the spot.

That alone made it the best prototype design review ever. Looking forward to today… and having relations back on that table :)
